Is my Sharp VHS recorder worth repair, model VC-MH705HM?
Author: admin // Category: sound recording londonThe picture has disappeared. I can record and play back in sound only and there is no playback picture with previously well recorded material. Also I cannot access a menu. If this is recognised immediately as a defect for which there is a ready replacement part it may be worth repair but if the problem needs investigation an effort to repair is probably uneconomical. Any recommended Sharp – note capital letter on Sharp please – agents known please in (SE) London?
Thank you to James M for his advice but I award best answer to the immediately preceeding answerer

It would be far cheaper just to replace it, you could probably even replace it with a combo dvd/vcr unit for what it will cost to get repaired.

Why bother repairing it or replacing it with a VHS recorder I
have a "Humax" freeview box with hard drive giving up to 80 hrs recording time, with no dvd's to store and no bulky vhs tapes with inferior recordings to store either.

First question is have you tried cleaning the head. Get a VHS head cleaning tape it will only cost a couple of quid. If you have not cleaned it for some time give it a couple of tries. If this fails then I am afraid it will cost more to repair than replace. I personally have a lot of old video tapes which are not replaceable. I recently bought a VHS from Argos for under £30. I wouldn't buy a combo unit, as I already have a Hard drive/ DVD recorder and did not need one. Hope this helps
